Why does concrete crack in North Texas?
Mostly because of the ground under it. Much of North Texas sits on clay with a high shrink-swell potential: it swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries. U.S. Department of Agriculture soil descriptions say the Sanger clay of the Grand Prairie region of north-central Texas cracks 1 to 3 inches wide and more than 20 inches deep when it is dry, and the Houston Black clay of the Blackland Prairie cracks 0.5 to 4 inches wide and 12 inches deep or more. Concrete on that ground has to be built for it: a compacted base, reinforcement, and control joints spaced no more than 24 to 36 times the slab thickness (for example, about 10 feet apart on a 4-inch slab), cut at least a quarter of the way through, with panels kept close to square. Wire mesh helps keep cracks tight, but it does not stop concrete from cracking. The joints decide where it cracks.
Can you pour concrete in the Texas summer heat?
Yes, with the right planning. Concrete placed in high heat sets faster, so a crew should dampen the base before the pour without letting water puddle, schedule deliveries to avoid the hottest part of the day, limit the water added at the job site, and keep the new slab curing for at least 3 days. With that planning, concrete can be poured through a North Texas summer.
